I use a Conn 10J for my frequent solo performances. I could tell you my own reasons, but I've polled my audience to see what they think:

The Rat Terrier finds the presence of the 273rd overtone to be a compelling factor in the instrument's favor. I dunno; I just don't hear it.

The Chihuahua is so inspired by the sound that he usually feels compelled to accompany me. That would be okay, but he steps all over my cadenzas.

The Shihtzu -- who thinks I should have bought a Lark -- mopes in the corner until I stop playing, occasionally coming over to bark at my accompanist.

The franken-pup (a mutt only the AKC could not love) finds the empty gig bag to be an unusually comfortable place to sleep.

Joe Baker, who finds that very few humans want to listen to tuba solos for very long.
