One more thing on tires--tread patterns on bicycle tires are only useful when what you are riding on is softer than the tread rubber. If you see tracks, then knobs have something to grab and they are useful. An all-purpose tire for use on dirt as well as pavement is quite a different thing from the tires most people use on road bikes for their club rides. Those people are looking for pavement performance, not off-road versatility, and if they make it to the gravel they'll probably go down no matter what. But even smooth tires do okay in dry dirt because they dig in side to side where you need traction (as proven by Lance Armstrong in his little "shortcut" in this year's Tour).
