Talent at the high-school level doesn't have much to do with who is going to make it in music, especially on easy instruments that need only play one note at a time (usually a whole-note). The hard worker on a low-brass instrument has a great shot at success. Christian Lindberg picked up trombone in his late teens. He had a professional orchestra gig by 18 (if I remember correctly). His practice and workout routine is intense to say the least. To really make it in the piano or violin world, students usually need an earlier start.

There will be fewer full-time jobs open each year than the number of great players at one large school.

Discouriging? Not on your life. Perhaps the only people who should go into music are those who have no other choice. In other words, those people who are driven to play an instrument and make music. Ever tried quitting? If you are meant to play music, there is no quitting, no matter what hardships you encounter along the way.
