Ships are female, be it a speedboat or a garbage barge or an oil tanker. Figureheads on old sailing vessels were female, by and large.
"God bless this ship and all who sail in her" and then they break a bottle of champagne over her bow. 'Course, that'd leave a heckuva dent in a tuba and leave the bottle intact.
