Every so often, I come across a CD in my collection that completely blows me away that features lesser known works.

The CD that immediately comes to mind for me is the Franz Schmidt-Symphony No. 2 with Neeme Jarvi conducting the Chicago Symphony. The playing on this early 1990's cd reminds of the classic CSO brass section. Its one big, solid wall of sound anchored in this case by Rex Martin. You can hear some of it here:

Another amazing recording of lesser known works is one again conduted by Jarvi, but with the Scottish National Orchestra..the CD is entitled, "Music from Estonia, Volume 1". It features works of Heino Eller and Kaljo Raid. The 3 Eller pieces are beautiful but for chamber orchestra. The Raid Symphony features some killer brass parts and man do they play their collective butts off! Check it out here:
