Here are some serious suggestions:

1) Talk the conductor into letting you not use the mute. A Mute in a tuba is an abomination. This probably won't work though.

2) Have an assistant put the mute in for you. This is actually done quite a bit. Bassists, trombonists and percussionist are good candidates.

3) If the mute has a flat large end, set it on the floor and then turn the tuba over onto it. Use the same motion as you would to set the tuba down on its bell. Be careful not to jam the mute in too hard.
