I agree with Mr. Jacobs, that in order to exhale after filling up the lungs above the "resting point"(approx.25% full), the diaphragm does nothing if you are simply to just "let" the air out. However, if you need to crescendo or decrescendo (or both) on a note or phrase, the diapragm will be involved somewhat.

The "Old School" of "Support" actually DID mean something; it just got misinterpreted by many people, who ended up teaching many others. "Support" of the diaphragm just meant to not be "lazy" with your exhalations, just efficient. "Pushing" the tone becomes obvious to the player that listens, or the teacher that listens to the player pushing. Just imagine listening to an orchestra that plays everything that's marked forte at their maximum, both in volume and in effort; it would be like playing a car stereo or "boom box" to the point where it blares.
