That really is a neat gizmo!

BTW, Chuck's description is very good, but applies only to down-blowers. Reverse everything, and it would apply to up-blowers.

I wonder, I wonder, why (french) horn teachers seem to never teach any of these concepts? The standard "wisdom" is to blow straight down the leadpipe, period. I have never, ever, heard any mention from a professional, either in private or in an email list, about changing the lip positions to get the different ranges. There is one book that suggests that the air be "bounced" off the inside of the There is mention of the chin moving down and out for the low range, but not the lips themselves. There also seems to be some mystique that embouchure can't be taught in English, but must be accomplished through exercises only, even if those exercises are continually being practiced on an incorrect embouchure. No wonder horn has such a reputation for being difficult!!
