I am going to be playing a Besson 993 BBb tuba in a brassband in the near future. I've been practicing on this tuba (playing clark studies and trumpet music).
I am trying to find a good mouthpiece combination to go with this tuba. I've tried a PT48 (an it was pretty good) and several others. My question is.....Can you get away using a somewhat smaller mouthpiece on one of these beasts in order to gain more control? How much will this influence depth of sound? My understanding is that many tuba players use medium sized mouthpieces on the 5/4 & 6/4 tubas.
Can someone with experience shed some light?
