OS X had a problem until recently with scanner driver software: about the only thing that worked with a majority of scanners was a shareware program named VueScan from Hamrick software. It has sort of a funky interface, but it works very, very well and is reasonably inexpensive, with unlimited update rights. I've had pretty good luck with a discontinued UMAX scanner, the Astra 6400, which still shows up on the unnamed auction site for $45-65. It was the cheapest firewire scanner made, and is really fast and gets reasonably good results, especially at that price.

There are now a number of dual-mode scanners (USB and firewire) in the $275-300 range that have their own OS X drivers. There's not a combination as fast and cheap as the one above.

There is a version of Finale below the top version that does scanner-to-finale file recognition; check their web site. I believe that CNET Mac news listed a new program that does the same thing reasonably cheaply within the last couple of months.
