There is a truly amazing recording of the Czech Philharmonic performing "Ma Vlast" with Vaclav Tallich conducting. It was a live performance given in Prague in 1944 for an audience of mostly German officers. They played the Dvorak 8th on that program as well, although it was not recorded. The musicians were given an opportunity to express their national identity in front of their conquerors and played with an almost unbelievable amount of passion and intensity.

The Czech Phil. was certainly no worse than one of the four best orchestras in the world during the 30's and 40's. Tallich was an inspired conductor, especially doing Czech music, who has never been given the acclaim in the U.S. afforded to some of his peers, like Walter, Klemperer, or Toscannini. Being a part of that performance would have been a rush comparable to riding a wave at the Banzai Pipeline.
