It is great that anyone can enter these competitions, regardless of age or profession. In the trombone world, all of the ITA competitions have an upper age limit. This excludes many people who may be just starting a performing career, older players who want to compete for fun (amateurs and pros), or college professors who need an outside measure of their playing ability to help with the tenure process. By having an open-ended competition, the level of performance is likely to be higher than by excluding a bunch of players.
Many great players won't follow through with their good intentions of making a tape before the deadline. It is worth entering even if you think you may be outgunned--by making a tape your playing will improve.
Now how does that Vaughan Williams go again? ;)
