I had forgotten that you were a horn player... You might be able to pull off a neat trick by inserting your french horn mouthpiece inside the tuba mouthpiece (a perfect fit I might add). Playing the part on the frenchhorn mouthpiece may give you additional control if it comes to crunch time. I had a horn friend play my F tuba that way, and he had a blast. I don't know how it will sound, but it may be a nice "trick in the bag" that may help you out.
