I just think my main problem is that most tubas are designed for easy piston-ing for people with abnormally large hands (such as me). It takes more muscle to move my fingers then it does most people, and its just easier to let the joint take most of that strain by keeping them straight.
I've also had that strange "locked" finger thing happen to me. Though never when playing..
