It's not that simple to get a committee of 7-10 orchestral musicians to agree on anything, let alone choosing "the best player that day" at an audition and beyond that at an audition for an instrument which none of them plays. And beyond all that having the music director agree with the majority of the committee is often difficult. There are specific cases where a committee of players has been unamimous for one player and the music director has chosen another player (in many orchestras the music director comes in and only listens to the final round and has the only vote in the finals and only takes advice from the committee). So you could say that the winner of an audition was "the best player that day" but the committee that listened to every candidate in every round could disagree with you. In other words, it's subjective. The only thing you can positively say about the winner of an audition is: they won the audition.
