And yet every good piano player and string player in college is spending 6-8 hours per day in a practice room. They probably spend an hour a day on scales alone. Focused practice is good, but don't discount mindless repetition. Or semi-mindless. I don't walk from point A to point B focused on what I am doing. But I do pay attention to the world around me. If you want to be able to play your instrument on the highest levels, there are somethings you should be able to do mindlessly. Like scale patterns. Playing with a good sound with clean attacks. Multiple tounging.

The only reason we don't practice as much as string players and piano players is fatigue. Chops wear out faster than fingers.
