If he likes the Yamaha/Besson style of 4/4 BBb (tall, top action, narrow bell stack), then seek out the Weril equivalent. Looks to be very similar, and you could get a 4 valve unit new for well under $3K. I seem to remember the playing traits being slightly better than the average Yamaha.

If the design isn't a big deal then get a front action horn as these are a little more comfortable. Good horns to look at are used Kings (piston) and Miraphones (rotor). They are both solid and if and when you decide to sell it, you should get your money back.

Whatever you do, try to get a 4 valve horn. As your son starts to develop the fourth valve will come to be increasingly neccesary.

I would call a few reputable dealers that are listed in the shops section like Dillon's, Baltimore Brass, WW&BW, Low Brass Werks, etc. and talk to the "tuba guy".

Find the best deal that meets your needs and purchase it. Most of the shops have very able players to deteremine the playability of most horns. They could pick out a good one for you and ship it to you. More than likely you and your son will be happy with the results.
