I purchased a tuba from Marlene at Taylor music in Aberdeen, SD. the website is www.1800usaband.com They have a good selection and carry many used and refurbished tubas. I also really like the selection of tubas at Baltimore Brass. (found in the "shops" section on this very website)

One thing to consider in the cost of tubas is resale value. Any refurbished or new Mirafone tuba holds its value quite well. the big, used Conn 20J, 21j 24j 25j 36j horns also aren't bad for resale value. If there is a chance he might want to take his horn to college, I'd look for a 4 valve (or 5) instrument and consider a CC tuba.

If you're thinking of money in the immediate sense, rather than in the long run, you should be able to find something similar to what he was playing before quite inexpensively just from people who post to this discussion board. Good luck.

Good luck.
