Universities definitely can provide the necessary training to be a successful performer. I am a student at Duquesne University, and they only give music students one core class a semester so that the rest of our time can be dedicated to music. The teachers are also at the same level as any at conservatories. It's just a matter of finding a teacher you want to work with in a school you think you can thrive in. As for the auditions, everyone has good and bad days. The day of the final audition is what really counts. I know that with my college auditions, I had good ones, and some bad ones. It just depended on the day, and it always does. So you don't have to go to Eastman or Julliard to get into an orchestra. You have to find the school that fits you. Don't go for the name before the experience.
