Roger, what city are you in? I want to take lessons from you. Seriously.
(Tirade coming!)
I get so frustrated with teachers who take my money and say, "Duhhh....use more air!!" Why is it that teachers won't tell students the kind of things you just posted? I've come to very much the same conclusions, playing horn, after years of analysis and struggle, and your description of an upward slur is a good description of what I have finally developed. It sounds like you had to figure it out too, so I wonder why you weren't taught it either. Are people just not aware of what they're doing? When I say the word "analysis," I usually get huge negative reactions of "analysis is paralysis" etc etc blah blah. But if we can't figure out what we're doing, how are we supposed to teach anyone else how to do it?
(Tirade off.)
Thanks for your beautiful description of how to do an upward slur. I think it applies to all brass instruments.
