Shortening the main slide is where I ended up with my small 3-valver. I could not lip it all the way up, and got tired of trying to. I got the mouthpiece shank turned on a morse zero taper until it went all the way in, and it was still not enough. It still had intonation problems after I got it cut, but I could lip up the low range and lip down the high range and get it pretty much where it needed to be.
