I just bought a DEG tuba rest for my Willson Eb tuba. I can say that it helps me for my horn. I think my horn is a little too and this helps me to hold the instrument in the position I need it without taking a lot of effort. I have not used it a lot yet but I am pretty happy with mine so far.
I can't say if people will think you a wimp for using one or not. I have never thought that of anyone and I have not been to rehearsal with mine yet so I don't know what people will think or say about it but I like so I really don't care what they say either. Mine does not hold the horn but takes the bulk of the weight and it folds up with a pouch that will fit inside the bell of the horn for easy carry.
