I don't do either, so I can speak freely.
In my opinion, recitals should be *more* like gigging. Any *performance* should be well within the technical reach of the performer, otherwise it's a "stunt" and not a "performance".
If the piece still "needs work", then you shouldn't play it on a gig - and, in my opinion, you shouldn't play it at a recital, either!
