My quintet here at Ithaca has had the privledge of working with Alex Shuhan of the Rhythm and Brass (horn player) exclusively and have found that the only way we ever get anything done is to have a mutual agreement to tell each other if we dont' like what they do. There is no reason for you not to be musical even if it's just a fun gig quintet. Try "droning". Have the quintet breath and enter together on any pitch you so chose. Then go around in a circle and individually have each member go up to the 4th, 5th, and back to the root while others sustain the decided pitch. It will really help intervallic relationships and do wonders for pitch.
p.s. keep the 5th high, major third low, minor third high, so many quintets don't do that. Don't use a tuner--use your ears.
