You wouldn't have to replace the entire leadpipe to be able to use a standard shank mouthpiece, just the receiver. Replacing the receiver is also less likely to have an impact on other playing characteristics than would replacing the whole leadpipe. I don't see any reason to go through this bother though, unless you are really unhappy with how any of the Dennis Wick mouthpieces play for you. If you do replace the receiver, you could try a Dillon Adjustable Gap Receiver, which would allow you not only to use standard shank mouthpieces, but to optimize playing characteristics.

There have been a number of discussions on this board of the impact of various mouthpiece dimensions on playing characteristics. From what I remember, the concensus seemed to be that a larger throat tends to improve the sound, but if too large it can cause intonation problems.
