I agree with you that the intonation problems are different and fewer on the 2000. Handmaking bows will result in a thin exterior radius, in the same way that "production" methods will. In fact, all the hand hammering and re-pulling can result in an even thinner metal on the exterior radius. - "Handmade" almost always = more sandpaper.

Check out some old 6/4 Holtons. Let's assume that the MW guys are more skilled than the Holton guys were, but rest assured the old Holtons were "handmade". Various never-overhauled Holton top bows that I've seen are almost paper-thin on the exterior radius.
