My feelings about being stressed out in an orchestral situation are different than most. I can certainly see your point... though. If I am playing the tuba because i love to do it, there is no need for stress. You just sit, and play. It sounds beautiful, and all is good. If you miss a note, or chip one... who cares? We're all human.
I've always felt that if something I intended to do for the rest of my life made me nervous, then maybe it wasn't a good idea to do it. This differs from person to person, and I can think of quite a few "professionals" that get nervous. Maybe I'm just lucky.
My basic point: We should make music, to make music. Not let it stroke our egos, or stress us out. It takes away from the original reason for playing music.
