If I home schooled (' have considered it - ' won't be doing it) I would hire experts to tutor my kids one-on-one in my personally weak subjects. Probably (AT) approximately $1000 per year for a couple of tutors (total $2000 for two), this would still be affordable and convenient. (That would average $27/hr. for 36 weekly one hr. tutoring sessions, which I believe would have done quite well for my kids, along with my own teaching.)

On average, home-schooled kids do astonishingly well on ACT/SAT tests. Perhaps the caring that goes along with parenting does a great deal to make up for weaknesses (ie: The parents work very hard to educate themselves , as well as their children.) I know for a fact that not all government teachers care as much as Carroll Gotcher.
