Alexander question

I was wondering if the extra-large shanks on those vintage Alexander tubas have anything to do with the grogeous vintage Alexander sound, can anyone help answer that?

It's a lot of hassle to get one of these horns because most mouthpieces won't fit the shank. I don't know about how the mouthpiece adapter works but I guess using a mouthpiece mouthpiece with a shank that is custom made will produce more satisfactory results?

thanks,
