I had an old Holton (Chicago made) trombone and a baritone. I found both to be well made, nicely playing instruments. Holton French horns were considered some of the best American made horns of their time, even though Frank Holton was originally a trombone player. They didn't have as strong a reputation for baritones, but I think that, especially in their early days, they were one of the better brass instrument makers, although stay away from their saxes.

As with any older horn, the condition of the valves and the integrity of the metal and joints would be the main issues to look for. If at all possible try it out first and, if you like the way it plays, go for it.
