The 187 actually starts getting bigger in the wraps once it leaves the tuning slide and gets gradually bigger all the way to the bell.
The sound is very dark and full and very German. If you are playing large pieces that take a lot of volume the 187 will do the job without breaking up the sound like on other tubas.
the CC comparison from the 186 to the 188 is quite true and I have also wondered why the 187 was not a BBb 188 as well.
If you play a 186 and then play a 187, I think you will like the 187 better.
