I can speak only to what I've heard about horns. It seems that the factory production process is imprecise compared to hand made, in that globs of solder and misalignments are more common. With a maker who puts the proper attention in his product, you are more likely to get an instrument without flaws. In particular, I have heard that there is wide varaiation in quality in Holtons, Conns, Paxmans, and Alexanders, all horns of good reputation but with caveats. Berg and Schmid, which are hand made, are of notably more consistent high quality. If I said this on the horn list, it would start a flame war.
