One thing I note is that the leadpipe on this tuba is extremely short--less than 11" from the tip of the receiver to the 5th valve ferrule. Doubtless this has something to do with the intonation issues. I wonder if the 4-valve instruments had fewer problems.

Those BBS-ers out there who have had 5th valves added to the leadpipe of your piston-valved instruments are the best ones to comment on what the addition did to intonation. It'd be interesting, because I don't think the subject has ever come up.
