Joe,
I've had good luck making a ring from vinyl tubing, 3/16"ID, 5/16"OD, and fitting it snugly around the bell rim, securing the ends together with cyanoacrylate. the result looks much like the rings that Rudolf Meinl provides with his tubas. In my many years of wearing a sousaphone for Uncle Sam, I had plenty of irritation from the ringing you describe, and got much relief that way. I think that when the bells were originally spun, they didn't close the rim tightly enough, or didn't put enough solder into the rim. When working on a bell annealing, I found that having the rim in about 1/2" of water protects the rim from losing solder from overheating. Enjoyed your post!
