I think you hit the nail on the thumb when you quoted the supervisor as saying "That was then, this is now". I flew twice this spring with a tuba on two different airlines. Both times I called the airline before the flight to get information on oversized baggage. I had the dimensions and the weight of my horn ready. Both times I was told that I would be assessed a surcharge but when I checked the horn, it slipped right on through. I dare say that in light of all that has happened in the last two weeks it is not going to be so easy to fly with large items.
