The Besson 983 is a nice Eb tuba. Decently broad/dark in the low register, a little brighter in the upper register. It worked fairly well for most of my needs.
If I could only own a single tuba, it would probably be the Willson Eb. Not as good as a euphonium substitute, but better overall for what a tuba is asked to do. More open low register than the compensating Besson.
Since I'm playing in quartet, quintet, and periodically a couple of 15-20 pc brass or mixed ensembles, I've decided to try a 3/4 F, 4/4 BBb combination of horns. To this end, I was glad to see the Eb sell, 'cause now I can go buy something else!
