Joe "who admittedly usually just grabs the right corks and felts out the right boxes" S. is nothing special among skilled craftsmen in doing so.

His eyes and fingers have developped into quite precise calipers applicable within his trade.

But the original posting was about a consultation on the phone. Which disallows for such tools, more calling for an encyclopedic knowledge.

All of us are trained not only by dedicated education, but by the challenges of our everyday.

If a brass tech mostly services school districts of Yamaha and Miraphone observations, his Conn knowledge easily gets rusty.

Another poster enters the term of top brands. All of my experience tells me, that this term is volatile one. Varying wildly from country to country, from area to area, from school to school (in the sense of followers of different top rate teachers/soloists).

I could tell you of diverse brands of a number different winds and brasses, that are big hits in other countries, but which are unsellable in my country.

One certain repairman specialising in one instrument has a well qualified son teaching that instrument. All of the son’s students play the brand that the father imports. Which excludes these students from being accepted from other highly qualified teachers.

We are living in a world of relativities. Please do not discard persons going down to basic measurement procedures before they issue absolute answers.
