Oh, here's another flea market story. When I started playing again in 1981,
the local Junior College gave me a nice older Mirafone to use. It was stolen
out of my car, and about two or three weeks later a local guy was bragging
to our local symphony's tubist about a horn he got at the flea market for $100.
Well......when an arrangement was made for the flea market buyer to come by the hall
to show the horn, he must have got suspicious or something and left before the tubist
could show up (and confirm the 24xx serial number.) Next thing we heard was it went to
Mirafone for a complete refurb, including a new bell-front bell. Since Mirafone didn't
put s/n's on replacement bells, and kept no record of the sn on the refurbed tuba,
we'll never know "for sure." (but I'd bet a dozen Krispy Kremes "George"
knew he had a hot horn.) A steal of a price is often just that....a steal!
