The Willson, in the times that I've played on it, invited music-making to a greater extent than the big Yamaha. The small Yamaha can be a very personal instrument--it is so easy to play that for me I can spend a much greater percentage of my concentration on the music. The big Yamaha seemed a lot harder to steer. The Willson seemed to sing as easily as the small Yamaha, at least for me.

Also, it had a bigger, mellower sound with more character and less brilliance, or so it seemed to me. I would not buy the Willson for a solo horn, but for a bass tuba for larger ensembles, such as the upper lines in band music or if I ever get to do the orchestra thing again. The little Yamaha already meets my needs for a horn that works in a quartet or quintet.
