In my opinion, if they broke it, they're responsible for repairing or replacing it. But, you need to have proof that this was done by the repair shop and not by students in the High School.
The first thing to do is to send them a request, in writing, describing the damage that was done and asking them to make good on it. This would be even better if you know an attorney on who's letterhead you can write the letter. If they don't respond, or respond negatively, you can take them to small claims court to recover the cost of a new case. Just the threat of small claims court should be enough to get them to pay. If they don't show up in court you will probably get a judgement against them automatically and them you have a legal document to use to force payment.
