Your point is excellent and reminds me of something Roger Norrington said about his landmark original-instrument Beethoven interpretations. He said that we play this music as it was originally played so that it will sound new again. We as an audience have become so accustomed to loud interpretations that they are less novel than the more quiet interpretations that use the techniques available at the time. In their quietness, the old approaches can be quite as shocking as they would have been by their loudness 150 years ago.
