Am I the only poor soul that started out on tuba? I was a runt of a kid in 6th grade and they handed me what I belive was a Conn 20J and a mouthpiece that had the silverplating wore off. After every rehearsal I had a big green circle around me mouth. The valves were so terrible that between whole notes I had to pull the valves back up.
I carried that horn on the bus back and forth to school every day all the way through middle school. No one ever suggested lessons so I just sat around making up tunes and generally entertaining myself. It never occured to me that there was any other path to tubadom and I enjoyed every moment.
