A friend of mine who has a huge and very, very good marching program regularly uses 8-10 King upright recording bell tubas, and he often recruits from the clarinet section. He says that there's something about clarinet embouchure that makes it easy for them to make a good tuba sound. His section has been more than half girls several times, and they're always a powerful section.
