They surely didn't think that the Yama's were lighter than the Conn's? I teach sectionals at a local high school that has Yama's, Conn's, King's, and a couple of old Reynolds', all silver. The Yama's outweigh the closest competition (Reynolds) by an easy 15 lbs. Those are the heaviest sousas I've ever seen a high school march with.
To the original post: It IS a sousaphone. There's a reason you don't see one in the back row of an orchestra very often. Relaquering probably won't make THAT much difference.
