the only such experience i can share is that i *almost* bought a used (incidentally in "like new" condition) horn without really trying it out. i bid on it on one of the auction sites, figuring "this tuba company doesn't make a bad horn (see a post below)!" well, i was proven wrong with some research. i ended up buying a new horn, made by the same reputable company, after test playing 2 that were both good horns.

i guess the moral of the story is, especially with used horns, despite how "new" of condition, be careful. at least try to check out the history, as i see many people on this bbs do. i'm sure it's more often than not the horn you get will be fine, but you should make sure you have the option of trading for another horn if something happens on the way or you aren't completely satisfied. i think most if not all of the "tubastores" do that now.
