One of my students (B.M. Horn Performance) did some research using detachable bells from Lawson on his French horn. Just about every material was used including a bell covered in Bondo (you know the stuff used to fill dents in cars). In a nutshell, not an appreciable difference between any of them - although the Bondo bell sure is heavy! Perhaps he'll allow me to post the results. More later - Daryl
