The literature is weak. Thank goodness Bill Bell, Harvey Phillips,
Harold L. Walters and others saw that need and began writing and
demanding solo high school literature years ago. I forget how many
pieces Harv commissioned himself.

We've been helped by transcriptions and original sonatas and concertos.
But new and broader works are critical. Unfortunately, some of the
serious concertos for tuba and brass quintet are commissioned by and
for the professional group which has asked for them and are not
available to the remainder of the performing populace.

Several universities that I know say that there is just not enough
literature for the tuba to offer the performance doctorate.
A lack of literature not only limits our playing; it creates
artificial ceilings as well.

While most of us don't want such a degree anyway, it does mean that
the perception of MUSIC DEPARTMENTS is of a rather limited instrument.
Perhaps we should start there.

For what its worth
