The original owner was Arnold Jacobs. He ordered a bell-front upright piston-valve horn from Holton for some CSO recordings in the early 1970s. However, Holton sent him the upright-bell front-action piston valve horn instead. He sold it to a student of his, Alex Cauthen, during a lesson in '72. In Alex's words, "[Mr. Jacobs] was a little steamed..."

Alex had a Hirsbrunner fifth valve installed in 1982. I believe he had actually sold it to Don Little at the time of Don's trip to Germany. It was overhauled by Meinl-Weston and they built the prototype 2165 based on it during this trip.

All of my remarks are based on Ed Jones' post in 1996 when Alex originally offered it for sale, and subsequent discussions with Alex during lessons.
