Second, though I don't pretend to agree or disagree with your figures, if you and Joe S. agree I'd bet you are right. But I did want to clarify that measuring SHOULD work IF you pull the 2nd valve slide so that 4+2 is an in tune C (and, yes, measure the WHOLE tubing including what is added inside the valve). Being within a half inch should be close enough, as he'll want much more than that in slide pull.

A question though: what is the formula for computing this? I'd be willing to put together a spreadsheet that would show the calculated length to add to lower any note by 1/2 step, 1 step, etc. Also, where there are bends, do you measure along the inside of the curve, the outside, or right down the middle? Seems to me that it would be right down the middle, but I've never known for certain.
