Interesting point about overtones in an ensemble but I had the complete opposite understanding. I think a brighter sound, in addition to being more interesting to listen to, sounds louder to our ears. The reason for this is that we pick up more quickly on higher frequencies than we do the lower ones and our brain inserts the relatively weak fundamental for us. It is much easier to 'cut through' an orchestra with something like a PT-3. With that in mind however, I would agree that a more fundamental heavy sound is probably helpful in an orchestral setting since the primary ensemble goal is to blend and create a homogenous sound. Even so, I think many of the tubas I like the most have a decent amount of ring at the 12th even if they are otherwise very fundamental heavy. What Joe is doing sounds really exciting to me.
